Home & Business Moves in Princetown
Princetown is the principal settlement of the parish of Dartmoor Forest, surrounded by vast moorland. Dartmoor ponies roam its craggy landscape, defined by forests, rivers, wetlands and tors trails wind through valleys with Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses.
The area is dotted with villages, including Poundsgate, Hexworthy, Ponsworthy and Dunstone. Princetown is also home to Dartmoor Prison which was used during the Napoleonic Wars.
We cover the Dartmoor Forest area, which was established by King Henry III in 1217. In 1239 he granted the Forest of Dartmoor (and the Manor of Lydford) to his brother, Richard, Earl of Cornwall. Richard’s son, Edmund inherited the forest, but when he died in 1300 with no heir, the forest reverted to The Crown. Then in 1337 King Edward III granted the forest to Edward, the Black Prince, at the same time as he created him the first Duke of Cornwall, and today, the forest still belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall.
At around 1,430 feet above sea level, it is the highest settlement on the moor, and one of the highest in the United Kingdom.
Local attractions include the beautiful Bellever Forest, The Dartmoor Prison Museum & of course, Dartmoor National Park. Princetown is also home to a Whisky Distillery & Dartmoor Brewery
We can also definitely recommend the nearby Two Bridges Hotel.
